The Dobermann

Let’s be honest…

Like every purebred dog, Dobermanns were bred for a purpose. That purpose is to protect YOU.

Being an elite guardian is a job that requires a dog to be a master at various important skills. Thanks to Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a number of those skills are already built right into this breed.

However, having such an intelligent, capable animal is not for the soft hearted. This breed is extremely headstrong, determined, and has high mental, physical, and emotional requirements. If YOU are willing to put the time, sweat, money, and love into your Dobermann, they will return it to you in ways you never could imagine. THAT is what keeps me coming back to this breed.

In my opinion, the following are VITAL pieces of information any first time Dobermann owner needs to know when considering owning one of these magnificent animals.

Doberman health

Dobermans are a breed with various health issues, most vicious: DCM. Even if you are NOT breeding your Doberman, yearly heart testing should be done in order to catch the disease early. It can buy you precious time with your baby. Thankfully, through our program, all of our progeny get discounted access to these tests and help if needed. Pet insurance is HIGHLY recommended, as proper treatment can easily reach tens of thousands of dollars. DCM is obviously not something I want for any of my clients, though I am not dense enough to say it will never happen in our lines. It is an unfortunate possibility in any breeders litter. Our pairings are only our “best guess”.

Dobermanns are not “set it and forget it” dogs

While there are certain breeds that are generally ok with not being around their human, Dobermans are not one of them. If you are looking for a dog you can kinda just have around and not have to pay a lot of attention to, please research other suitable breeds. Because of the qualities that were introduced in their creation and perfected in early generations, it is their “job” and pleasure to be around you. They are often referred to as “velcro” dogs because their instincts tell them to never leave you alone due to them being bred for personal protection. If you cannot handle a second shadow, you cannot handle a Doberman.

Endless Energy

Even into his 8th year of his life, Azazel was trotting through the house and as active as ever. Dobermans are a dog that NEED something to do. Whether it is chewing a toy, solving a puzzle, enjoying a walk around the park protecting you, or playing with their fur siblings, you can count on your Doberman to always be ready to go. However, in my time as a Doberman owner, I have noticed that people severely underestimate MENTAL stimulation and how much it can help behavioral problems and/or add enrichment to their lives. Todays world is FILLED with exciting puzzle toys for dogs, and the clever Dobermans thoroughly enjoy them. Physical AND mental exercise are KEY to healthy, happy dogs! I highly recommend snuffle mats!

War Beasts that require a bond

According to the University of Tennessee, 75% of dogs used in World War II were Dobermanns. European females weigh anywhere from 70-100lbs and European males weigh 80-110lbs. They are equipped with a sharp mind, athletic form, and an instinct to protect those they love that is second to none. This allowed them to excel in roles such as couriers, infantry, messengers, and scouts. Like any other large breed, they are truly living weapons. It is up to their owner to make sure these animals are trained and cared for properly. When a Doberman is loved correctly, a bond is created and owners will see all of these wonderful and unique qualities that make a Doberman bloom right before their eyes. It is of the upmost importance to love your hound equally in both the good days and bad days. If Dobermans are ignored and that bond is not properly formed, it could potentially lead to severe behavioral issues and you will not be getting the most out of your pet, and vice versa. These are dogs that are not as frequently used in military/police work today as they once were. This is mostly due to their attachment they have to their owners which makes it very hard to switch to another handler. Do not let their exterior fool you. Underneath that regal appearance is a deeply emotional, sensitive, and affectionate soul that lives to love and protect its owner.

Crates are not evil-they saves lives

Dobermans are an extremely intelligent breed, though sometimes the trouble they get themselves into would make you think otherwise. They are notorious for chewing things they shouldn’t and unfortunately, swallowing objects they shouldn’t either. This often leads to thousands of dollars in surgery. One of the best tools for Dobermans is a properly sized kennel, which is usually an XXL. People often think leaving dogs in their crate is lazy, cruel, and causes the dog harm. However, it is exactly the opposite. When introduced at a young age, a crate ends up being a place where the dog feels safe and cant get themselves into trouble. Crates should never be used as punishment, but as a tool for protecting them from their sometimes questionable decisions. Giving a treat every time they go into their kennel, plus some toys for when they stay in there will help them realize the crate is no reason to be unhappy while you are at work or it’s bed time.

Dobermans. are. goofy.

While they are majestic, they are also hilarious. I had no idea the severity of their comical nature with family until I had one myself! Every single day for the past 9 years, I have smiled and laughed at LEAST a handful of times thanks to a Doberman. Their unique “teapot whistles” will drive you crazy and make you giggle at the same time.
